Fonds

SEPI's historical fonds are made up by the INI's, AIE's, TENEO's and SEPPA's archives. At SEPI's historical archive are not keep the archives of the companies which once belonged to the Group, but only the documentation generated as a result of their relations with the parent company.

The documentation available for Researchers is that generated by the following administrative units:

INFORMATION WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN THIS ADDRESS

In 1996 work began on the digitalization of the indexes of the dossiers in the General Register Unit, which currently has been completed. Each filed dossier included a detailed breakdown of the documents which it contained, ordered according to their entry order in the Unit, stating whether they were entries, exits or procedures, the sender and the addressee, the date on which they were recorded and a succinct summary of their content.

Every time a search is executed, an Annex will be found attached to each file with an image of its content's indexes (only in very few cases the documents stated in the indexes have not been preserved), in the case of the dossiers which do not meet the 30-year old requirement, these Annexes will not appear.

General Register Unit

Most of the documentation generated and received at INI was kept at the General Register, the unit in charge of the diffusion and filing of the documentation which entered, exited or was processed at INI.

The documentation which has been preserved at the General Register is a true reflection of INI's activity, from its internal organization to the financial state and evolution, the technical projects, Minutes, legislation, and so on, of the companies which were attached to it, since the norms which regulated the relationships between the Institute with its companies stipulated the periodical submission of certain information and the request for authorization to the corresponding management bodies of the Institute for any important matter.

The procedure used for its classification consisted in including the documentation in dossiers which were organized according to the following decimal classification.

In this Web page you can only have access to sections 2-Industrial Division and 3-Companies. In case that you were interested in having information about the remaining sections, please get into contact with the Documentation Center.

When the document could not be classified according to its content in any of the other sections, or it was regarded as an administrative matter of no significance which was not going to be subjected to further procedure, it was included in this section.

It includes information about non-INI companies, including commercial offers, provision of material to INI or to its companies; institutions and persons who at some time had any relationship with the Institute, INI's internal administration: buildings, purchases, exhibits, ceremonies, symposia.

This section reflects INI's financing. It includes the correspondence maintained with banks and financial institutions, budgets, loans, inventories, assessments and insurance policies.

It includes the different activity sectors on which INI was interested. For instance, this Section encompasses requests for aid for industrial projects, feasibility studies for new investments, industrial sectors' reports, investment projects, technical collaboration with private companies, both Spanish and foreign ones, procedures for purchases, offers made by private companies for collaborating with the INI's companies, letters from private companies asking for financial support for new activities or for supporting their activities.

The documentation regarding the companies whose establishment was pending INI’s initiative or the Government’s decision was filed on the division “INI Companies in the process of being established”, while that of the private companies which asked for financial support was filed in the industrial section. Once they were established as a state-owned company or as a state-run one, they were assigned a constant numerical code, which in turn was made up by the following nine categories:

0. Sundry 5. Law
1. Staff 6. Affiliated Companies
2. Deeds, Articles of Association, Norms 7. Minutes
3. Economy and Finance 8. Reserved
4. Studies, Reports and Technical Projects 9. Orders

It includes the norms, organization, rights, duties, and so on, which were issued by the different INI's Departments and their units.

This organizational system required to include a number of copies of each document under different headings: this is the reason why it is normal to find duplicates, with the exception of the so-called paragraph "Expedientes Originales" or "Expedientes Únicos", which were made, in an exceptional way, by the express requirement of the Chairman's office or the Senior Managers, with the original documents of issues which were regarded as important or of a confidential nature, which made advisable to keep them in a different Archive. Having access to them allows to get all the existing information regarding a concrete issue. There are 1,119 of them, and they go back from 1970 to 1944, and comprehend different issues which are related to the activities carried out by the Institute and its companies.

Audiovisual Collection

The Audiovisual Collection of SEPI's Historical Archive is made up by the photographs and films which were shot with propagandistic aims since INI's incorporation.

On request, it is possible to see in SEPI's facilities a number of films in digital and VHS format.

The photographs collection is organized by enterprises, which were periodically asked to send photographs depicting their industrial facilities, or significant public events. It is possible to have access to 10 photographic albums corresponding to different INI's enterprises, or trade fairs and exhibits in which either INI or its enterprises were present from 1950 to the 1970s.

Currently they are being recorded, and thus in order to consult them it is required to get into contact with the Documentation Center.

Under this heading are the documents about the INI's Chairmen and some of its Vice Presidents. It includes a large number of recorded documents of which there are copies in the Register, but it keeps also many others which were not recorded at the Register, and it represents, anyway, a most interesting documentation, which enables to make a follow-up of the issues dealt by each Chairman during his or her term in office.

(twice Minister of Industry and Trade 1938/1939 and 1945/1951 and the first Chairman of INI 17-10-1941 /30-10-1963).

It includes documentation from 1916 to 1978 which is a must if you want to know about the first decades of INI and its companies. It was under Mr. Suanzes when the Group's industrial and corporate structure was set up and INI played its greatest role in the Spanish Economy.

The documents have been fully digitalized and they can be accessed at SEPI's Documentation Center.

(Manager of INI, 1946/1947, Vice President of INI, 1945/1951, Minister of Industry from 1951 to 1962, Chairman of ENCASO, 1944-1956, Director of ENHER, 1951-1967 and Chairman of Bioquímica Española 1951-1956).

The documentation about Mr. Planell complements well that about Mr. Suanzes during the years in which they worked together at INI. Specially noteworthy are the letters, drafts, contract projects and studies on the activities, real or potential, carried out by the Institute.

(General Secretary and for the Board of Directors of INI, 1941/1947, Manager 1948/1963 and Chairman 30-10-1963/25-4-1969).

A total of 176 files have been identified with documentation for the years 1950/1969. Among them are speeches, trips, internal issues and issues concerning INI's companies, correspondence maintained with particular persons and with official entities.

Since the Chairmanship of Mr. Julio Calleja fonds are grouped under the heading "Presidentes Varios" (Sundry Chairmen), and each new Chairman made use of the documentation pertaining his predecessors for dealing with those matters which, due to the fact that their term in office was so short, in many instances were not concluded during their mandate. That is why the same file can include management documentation for different Chairmen, and which were proceeded during the chairmanship of:

The accessible documentation in the High-ranking officers section, save that regarding Mr. Suanzes, appears described in the content indexes which are being digitalized and included in the Documentation Center's data base. The Documentation Center has many files whose treatment has been neglected and whose processing is pending, and which shall be included progressively, as they are processed.
